Sarajevo, February 1, 2023 - On this day exactly 561 years ago, the legalization and legal verification of the act of issuing the endowment of Isa-beg Ishaković began as a legal act that officially transferred the property of the founder of Sarajevo from private to public property for the benefit of all people. This act, which is nothing more than a kind of founding act of Sarajevo, took place in the month of Jamadul 866 AD, that is, from February 1 to March 2, 1462 according to the Gregorian calendar, and is considered an official document that testifies to the beginning of the new city, i.e. . an urban entity that is continuously developing to the present day.
On this occasion, the Association for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of BiH "Isa-beg Ishaković" congratulates all the citizens of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the 561st anniversary of the writing of the foundation of Isa-beg Ishaković, with the message that, without diminishing the importance of important dates in the recent history of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, , this very date, i.e. February 1, should be included in the City's calendar, and taken as the official "Foundation Day of Sarajevo".
Precisely because of this act, Sarajevo is unique because it is the first city in Bosnia and Herzegovina that was planned and purposefully created in this way and which can precisely determine its beginning as an urban entity, and later there will be more similar cities that will be formed in the same way principle.
Vakufnama of Isa-beg Ishaković is preserved today in a copy, the original disappeared after the first mayor of Sarajevo, Mustaj beg Fadilpašić, gave it to Kosta Hormann to be sent to Vienna for restoration. The plan was for Isa-bey Ishaković's foundation to occupy a central place in the National Museum in Sarajevo, which was opened a little later. Today, another gem of Bosnian culture, the Sarajevo Haggadah, is preserved in that place.
"Isa-beg Ishaković laid the foundations for the further development of the city, and his example of donating buildings, city infrastructure and land to the endowment was followed by many benefactors until Gazi Husrev-bey. From the time of Isa-bey, Sarajevo experienced accelerated development and later flourished, asserting itself as the center of Bosnia at that time. Also, it should be said that today Sarajevo would probably be a much bigger metropolis if it wasn't for Eugene of Savoy's invasion of Bosnia in 1697, if we know that Sarajevo was bigger and more numerous at that time, e.g. from Zagreb and Belgrade", it is stated in the press release of the Association
On the occasion of marking this significant date, the Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina "Isa-beg Ishaković" together with its partner JU Museum of Sarajevo will organize an Exhibition with the working name "Founder". The exhibition will be opened in Brusa Bezistan in the second half of this month.
The exhibition will tell the story of the urban beginnings and the creation of Sarajevo in 15 panels and five cubes with objects from that period. The exhibition will present in a vivid way how the development of the city shaped people's lives, and how the architecture underwent a change, i.e. how care was taken to achieve harmony, functionality and to respect the rights of the other and the different.
As part of the Exhibition, a model of the street "Trgovka", which was built by Isa-bey's son and was also dedicated, will be placed.
